Outgoing Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan expressed his "deep concern" over the further delay in Ibrahim Halawa's case.

Halawa was due to undergo a mass trial in Cairo today, but the hearing was adjourned until June 26th.

Amnesty International has condemned the latest delay, and called for his immediate release. The organisation says it is gravely concerned for his mental and physical well-being, amid reports of torture and mistreatment in prison

Previous dates were cancelled shortly before the 20-year-old was to appear in court.

He has now spent 942 days in prison, and is being tried alongside more than 490 other people.

Halawa has been held in Egypt since he was arrested for taking part in a protest in Cairo in August 2013.

Speaking before the latest adjournment, Fianna Fáil's spokesperson for the Irish Overseas and Diaspora, Senator Mark Daly says the Taoiseach needs to put more pressure on the Egyptian authorities:

Amnesty Ireland's Executive Director Colm O'Gorman says it is important that efforts continue to secure Mr Halawa's return to Ireland.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan issued a statement expressing his deep concern at the latest development:

"I want to reassure Ibrahim's family of my own and the Government’s continued commitment to achieving our two objectives: to secure his return to Ireland as soon as possible and to ensure his welfare during his detention. 

"My Department is continuing to provide consular assistance to Ibrahim Halawa through regular prison visits.

"Officials from my Department will continue to work closely with Mr. Halawa’s Egyptian legal team in support of our consular objectives.”
