The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s (INMO) has said July saw record numbers of patients on trolleys in our hospitals.

The organisation's trolley and ward watch figures for last month saw a total of 6,751 patients waiting for a "proper in-patient bed".

July's figures show a 1% increase compared to the same month last year - but also a 95% increase on 2006 numbers, the year in which the situation was dubbed a 'national emergency'.

The IMNO says the record July figures followed two months that had seen a 'significant reduction' in the number of patients waiting for a bed.

Speaking about the latest statistics, INMO General Secretary Liam Doran said: “These July figures are extremely disappointing and indicate the health system continues to underestimate the challenges arising within our emergency departments.

"The INMO has consistently said ED overcrowding and waiting lists difficulties cannot, and will not, be solved without additional nursing staff and an increase in bed capacity," he added.
