Gardaí investigating the discovery of a man's body in a canal in Co Kildare over the weekend have launched a fresh appeal for information in an effort to identify where the man was killed.

The dismembered body was found wrapped in plastic in a suitcase by passers-by in Ardclough on Saturday.

Gardaí believe the man was killed in another area and are appealing for anyone who noticed anything odd about their home or workplace after returning from a weekend away to contact them.

They say they have not yet been able to identify the man, but they believe he was killed sometime between Thursday and Monday.

Superintendent Gerard Wall says they have had 80 calls from members of the public, and are appealing for more witnesses.

Gardaí say the man was in his 20s, but he has not yet been identified. There is speculation that he may have been from eastern Europe.

A preliminary post mortem found no signs of gunshot or stab wounds, and did not lead investigators to a cause of death.

Gardaí say the focus of their investigation is to find where the man was killed. They believe he was murdered in recent days.

Tom Brady is security editor with the Irish Independent.

"It's a while since we have had something like this, and it is particularly gruesome - it tends to indicate that it may have been some sort of a gangland incident" he said.

"Gardaí are checking violent incidents that took place in the surrounding area and they are liaising closely with their colleagues elsewhere throughout the country, but particularly with their colleagues in in Dublin West and Dublin South".

Reporter with The Herald and Independent Newspapers, Conor Feehan, told Newstalk Breakfast earlier officers are keen to find the rest of the victim's body.
