The Garda Commissioner has appealed to anyone with any information about the murder of Kenneth O'Brien to come forward.

Gardaí in Dublin are trying to establish a motive for the murder of the 33-year-old, whose dismembered body was found in a suitcase in the Grand Canal at Ardclough in Co Kildare last weekend.

The father of one - from Clondalkin - has been described as a man who adored his family and worked hard for them.

Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan says it was a gruesome murder and anyone who knows anything should come forward:

"First and foremost I would like to convey the sympathies of An Garda Síochána to the O'Brien family, it is obviously a very gruesome murder.

What I would like to do is appeal to anybody who may have any information, no matter how small they think it is, we are very anxious to hear from anybody that may have any information that they can offer in helping us to identify the perpetrators of this awful crime."

Superintendent Gerard Wall, who is leading the murder inquiry, says Mr O'Brien was a family man:

"Ken might be known to his friends as a JCB driver, a diesel fitter, he recently returned after three years in Australia. He had been home in the meantime, but he had come home for good. He is a family man with a partner".
