Aer Lingus and Ryanair have cancelled a number of flights today due to industrial action by French air traffic controllers.

The strikes have caused the cancellation of 10 Aer Lingus flights departing and arriving into Dublin Airport.

Ryanair has also been forced to cancel 70 of flights, with six of those arriving to or departing from Ireland.

Both companies are offering customers free alternative flight transfers or refunds if they have been affected.

Ryanair's Kenny Jacobs told Newstalk Breakfast that the strikes have cost airlines billions over the years.

He said two things can fix the problem for passengers - a binding arbitration process to prevent strikes, or allowing other ATC's to run French airspace.

He also called on people to support Ryanair's petition to 'Keep Europe's Skies Open'.

Once it reaches one million signatures Jacobs said Brussels will be forced to "consider legislation to prevent further strikes".

More strikes are planned for next week on June 3rd, 4th and 5th, with June 14th - the day after the Euro 2016 match between Ireland and Sweden - also penciled in.

Kenny Jacobs said it is "very cynical timing by the French" as they are "targeting specific games" to cause maximum disruption.

The full list of Ryanair flights affected can be found here.

Both airlines are advising passengers to check online before departing for the airport.
