Former FF minister Paddy Lalor dies aged 90

Former Fianna Fáil TD, Minister and MEP Paddy Lalor has passed away at the age of 90.

Mr. Lalor was an elected representative for the Laois Offaly constituency 33 years.

During that period, he served as Minister for Post and Telegraphs and Minister for Industry.

He was also chief whip in the 1977-79 government under the late Taoiseach Jack Lynch, and was later elected as MEP for Leinster and served until 1994.

He also held the position of vice president of the European Parliament.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has paid tribute to him saying he had a long and dedicated career of public service.

"Paddy had a very distinguished political career and represented the people of Laois /Offaly with great pride," he said.

"He was a great GAA supporter and played for the Laois hurling team in 1949."

Mr Lalor is survived by his four children, Frances, Helen, Veronica and Joe.

His funeral will take place in Abbeyleix, Co Laois on Monday.
