There are a few hours to while away until it's time to go trick-or-treating, so we've picked five of the best family-friendly events around the country - that won't cost you a barmbrack penny!

1. Spirits of Meath - If you and the family really want to get into the spirit of things, then head to the place where it all began - more than 3,000 years ago, apparently! The Halloween Festival has been running the past two weeks and will go until Sunday November 1st, with some 25 aimed towards families. Not all the events are free, but it's definitely worth head along to capture some of the action. For more, click here

2. The Ark's Halloween Day DJ Disco - Children's cultural hub The Ark in Temple Bar, Dublin, is throwing a spook-filled disco on Saturday, October 31st for the day that's in it. Un-dead DJ Will Softly will be spinning the decks and scratching vinyl and guests are encouraged to don a costume for the occasion. Entry is free and on a first come first served basis - so get in early to avoid disappointment. The age range is for all the family and lasts an hour from 12pm - 1pm. For more, click here

3. Kenmare's Halloween Howl - Heading further South, Kenmare town in Co Kerry goes all out on ghoulish craic for the mid-term week from October 24th-31st - with cranky cooking, scarecrow building and pumpkin-carving workshops (€2 per pumpkin) - finished off with a traditional parade on Halloween night at 6pm which is free for all. 4. Slay the Dragon in Cork - Well, maybe not slay but you can walk alongside the dragon in a procession starting from Shandon in Cork at 7.30pm on Saturday October 31st, into the city centre and back out again, bringing to a close the community festival running from October 29th-31st, featuring scary stories and ghost tours and lots more. 5. Magic and Mystery at the Museum: All four branches of the National Museum (three in Dublin and one in Co Mayo) are putting on free events for children all Halloween week until November 1st. From The Horrible Halloween Zoology Tour to the Shadows, Sounds & Stories of Samhain - your bound to be a little bit spooked and informed at once. For more, click here

But if all of this is a little too energetic for you, why not stick the kettle on and have a listen to Documentary on Newstalk 'Halloween - A Living Tradition' which explores traditions around the world - from the Otherworld Halloween Festival in Dublin's Ballymun to the spectacle of the annual Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in New York.
