Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will meet again on Monday to continue talks on a minority government.
The two parties will 'continue contacts' over the weekend - but are not due to hold any meetings.
This afternoon's talks were arranged after a morning phone call between Enda Kenny and Micheal Martin - which both sides described as 'professional and cordial'.
Sources indicated it was brief, and largely restated the points made in the earlier talks that collaped on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, former Tánaiste Micheal McDowell says he believes that Fianna Fáil will be very happy to be in opposition.
Mr McDowell says they see Enda Kenny as a liability as Taoiseach.
