An eight-year-old girl has been killed in a tractor accident in Mayo.

The child was fatally injured in the incident on a farm in the Lismolin area.

Gardaí said the accident happened at around 5pm this evening.

The girl was taken to Mayo University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have launched an investigation and notified the Health and Safety Authority.

A spokesperson for the HSA said it will send inspectors to the farm tomorrow. 

A postmortem examination is also due to take place on Wednesday.
