The famous Dublin Molly Malone statue has been unveiled today in her new home outside St. Andrew's Church on the top of Suffolk Street in the city.

She has - quite literally - wheeled her wheelbarrow up the road. The world-famous statue was moved from the bottom of Grafton Street.

She has pitched her cart at the Failte Ireland tourism office for the duration of Luas works in the area.

Minister Donohue lends a hand

The Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) says Molly will be moved back to as close to her original position as possible, once the link-up is complete.

The statue was unveiled at the Grafton Street location by then-Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ben Briscoe during the 1988 Dublin Millennium celebrations.

Molly Malone was a semi historical/legendary figure - who was commemorated in the song 'Cockles and Mussels'.

She worked as a fishmonger but also as a working girl and died in one of the outbreaks of cholera.

The landmark has been moved to facilitate the Luas Cross-City works - which will extend the Green Line as far as Cabra and Broombridge.

Tourism and Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe spoke at the event.
