Dublin Zoo has welcomed its third baby elephant in recent months. The female calf was born on Wednesday and is the third birth in a 10 week period.

She was born to mother Bernhardine at 11:45pm on Wednesday, weighing in at 68kg.

The names of the other two calves - Kavi and Ashoka - who were born in July and August, were unveiled earlier this week.

Kavi was born to mother Yasmin on July 17th, followed closely by Ashoka - to mother Anak - on August 19th.

The zoo are looking to name their new arrival

Assistant director at Dublin Zoo, Paul O'Donoghue, said "Our latest arrival is a wonderful addition to our breeding herd of Asian elephants. It was a very quick and calm birth and Bernhardine's daughter Asha stayed with her throughout. The calf was standing within 10 minutes and has been suckling really well."

"It is just incredible for us to be announcing the birth of three Asian elephants in the space of ten weeks. It is an extraordinary achievement for the animal care team here at Dublin Zoo who are very proud of the expanding herd and of the significance of these births for the future of endangered Asian elephants."

Dublin Zoo has revealed some of the events planned for this October 2014 which they have named the 'month of the elephant' in celebration of the three new arrivals.

Leo Oosterweghel, director at Dublin Zoo commented, "The arrival of three Asian elephant calves is certainly something for us to celebrate. After a decade of continuous development Dublin Zoo is now one of the best zoos in the world and key to its success is the level of pride and ownership the people of Dublin have in it."

A naming competition will be hosted on Dublin Zoo's Facebook page and they are calling on the public to suggest a name for the latest arrival based on its Asian origins.
