While Donald Trump's entry into the race for the White House has already resulted in several embarrassments, losing an election poll to a piece of fruit doesn't look likely to give him a second wind any time soon. 

On July 1st, the 'AvocadoFact' Twitter account tweeted a seemingly silly and tongue-in-cheek poll that asked its followers to make a choice between the billionaire Republican candidate and the hard-to-gage-when-it's-perfectly-ripe fruit. The instructions were simple; if followers wanted Trump to win, they needed to favourite the tweet. If they wanted the avocado to make it to the Oval Office, they needed to retweet it. 

The results show that avocado, a native of Central America and Mexico, was the landslide winner:

Trump's slump and genuine unpopularity in opinion polls is a result of several disparaging comments he made about the Mexican immigrant population in the US.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best," he said. "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists," the billionaire mogul claimed when he launched his campaign last month.

Trump's comments have seen several lucrative business deals he has previously made fall through, with numerous business partners, including the NBC television network, sever ties with the controversial would-be politician.
