Donald Trump's campaign to win the Republican presidential nomination has included some headline-grabbing moments, but one of the plans that has garnered the most attention is his proposal of a wall between the United States and Mexico.

For the large part, it has been criticised as being impractical and too expensive to construct, but Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could get the wall done in a cost efficient manner given his business experience and skill in getting deals done.

Speaking to CNN earlier this week, Trump finally gave a proposed budget for the project, which he believes would cost in the region of $8 billion.

Explaining the rationale behind that figure, Trump said “what we’re doing is we have 2,000 miles, right? 2,000 miles. It’s long but not 13,000 miles like they have in China. Of the 2,000, we don’t need 2,000, we need 1,000 because we have natural barriers [...] and I’m taking it price per square foot and a price per square, you know, per mile".

He added that although the cost might seem high, he thinks he could get Mexico to pay for it: "We have a trade deficit with Mexico that is astronomical, much bigger than that [figure]. We will get - and I say it also is also part of my plan - Mexico is going to pay for the wall".

Mexican president Felipe Calderon has responded to that proposal by stating that the wall itself would be useless, and that "Mexican people, we are not going to pay a single cent for such a stupid wall".
