As the temperatures continue to heat up, pet owners are being reminded to keep their furry friends cool.

They are being reminded to never leave dogs in cars - and that leaving a window ajar and parking in the shade actually does very little to lower the temperature inside the vehicle.

The Dogs Trust says just a few minutes in a hot car can prove fatal for a dog.

“Always take the car keys with you, even if you are just running back into the house to get something”.

“The last thing you want is for your dog to accidentally lock himself inside your car on a hot day”, it adds.

It is also advising owners to apply pet sun cream to their dog’s easily burned areas.

It says human sun cream can be toxic for them - so pet owners should visit their local pet shop and get one that is made specifically for dogs.

They say dogs should be walked early in the morning or late in the evening, when the temperature is cooler.

And the Dogs Trust says doggy ice-cream is another way to keep your pooch happy.

Take three ripe bananas, 80ml of natural yogurt and five tablespoons of peanut butter.

Blend the mixture and pop it into ice cube trays or a Kong toy for freezing.

They’ll be barking for more...
