Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin has been accused of running an "old boys' brigade", after a former junior minister was added to a general election ticket on top of the existing candidate.

Councillor Deirdre Heney - who won the party nomination for Dublin Bay North in June - made the comments as the party announced that Sean Haughey would join her on the ticket.

"I went out and I worked really, really hard on a campaign...I believe that had Sean been selected at the convention, that there still would only have been one candidate", she told Newstalk Breakfast.

"I'm very, very disappointed in the leader of my party doing this to me - a woman who was elected fairly and squarely at a convention in Fianna Fáil".

"I do know that there is a friendship there between the leader of my party and Sean".

"The sad and awful thing about what has happened is that it might result in Fianna Fáil getting no seat in Dublin Bay North because the vote will be split".

Asked if she still had faith in Micheal Martin as party leader, she said: "I'm not going to comment about my faith in Micheal Martin...because I don't want to".
