A new leader of Britain's Conservative Party should be in place by September 2nd, the party's 1922 Committee executive has recommended.

Nominations to replace Prime Minister David Cameron will open on Wednesday and close at noon on Thursday.

Mr Cameron announced last Friday that he would resign before the Conservative Party conference in October.

He said he believed that the new Prime Minister should be the one to begin negotiations with Brussels following Britain's vote to exit the EU.

"The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected," Mr Cameron said.

He called it "an instruction that must be delivered" as he also thanked his supporters and congratulated Leave campaigners for their "spirited and passionate case."

Some of those hotly-tipped to replace Mr Cameron include former London Mayor Boris Johnson and UK Home Secretary Theresa May.
