Independent candidate Gerard Craughwell has won the Seanad by-election.

He defeated the Fine Gael candidate John McNulty on the second count.

The former British Army soldier was elected on Sinn Féin transfers.

Mr McNulty had said he would resign the seat straight away if he won, amid controversy over his nomination.

Last week, he effectively withdrew from the race by calling on the TDs and Senators who have a vote not to vote for him.

But the ballot papers were already printed with his name and some were even returned.

Mr Craughwell had the backing of Fianna Fáil and his win means the government can no longer be sure of having a majority in the Seanad.

Senator Craughwell says he is honoured to have been elected, and that he hopes the government will now treat the Seanad with respect.

Senator Craughwell spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime with Jonathan Healy after being elected and discussed his plans to remain independent. He told Jonathan that there is "an urgent need for reform of the Seanad". Listen back:
