Police have not named the victim, but it is understood she has connections to West Cork and Limerick.

The woman (64) was found dead at her home in the southern city of den Bosch on Monday afternoon by police who were responding to a call.

A man was also in the house.

Paramedics treated the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was then arrested.

A post-mortem has been carried out but the results have not been made public for operational reasons. Neither have the charges the woman's husband faces. However, police did say the circumstances of her death were suspicious.

He is due before a Dutch Rights Commissioner this lunchtime. Under Dutch law, a suspect must be charged or released within three days of arrest.

Irish Independent southern correspondent Ralph Riegel spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime:

"Police have confirmed the man, who was taken in for questioning, is the woman's husband."

"The woman's family are understood to be in Holland at the moment, in order to repatriate the woman's body."

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to her family.
