Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has been nominated by Sinn Féin for the role of Ceann Comhairle.

All seats in the 32nd Dáil have now been filled, with Sinn Féin taking 23 seats.

The current Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett, announced last month he would not be seeking re-appointment to the position.

Mr Barrett said: "It has been a great honour and privilege for me to serve as Ceann Comhairle for the 31st Dáil".

"However I will not seek or accept any nominations for the position of Ceann Comhairle during the next Parliamentary term".

"I look forward to participating in the 32nd Dáil and representing my constituents," he added.

Up until now, the Ceann Comhairle was selected by open vote when the Dáil meets after a general election.

However, new rules mean any incoming TD can put themselves forward for the post and be elected by secret ballot.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said: "I am deeply honoured to be nominated by my party for the position of Ceann Comhairle, a position first held by proud republican Cathal Brugha".

"In the 32nd Dáil, it will be imperative to have an experienced legislator as chair as there are likely fractious days ahead following on the new and ever more competitive configuration of Dáil representation".
