Burger King employees were tricked into smashing the windows of a restaurant to stop an explosion, when they received a phone call from someone purporting to be from the fire department.

Police say that employees at the Minnesota branch, received a prank call on Friday night claiming that the restaurant would explode unless the pressure was released. Both the manager and the workers believed the caller and smashed the windows on the ground floor, to comply with the instructions of the fake fire department representative.

Speaking in relation to the incident, a sergeant said:

"Officers arrived and found that the manager and employees of the Burger King were smashing out the windows,” sergeant Rick Boone told the Star Tribune. The manager explained they’d received a phone call from a male who identified himself as a fireman who said there were dangerous levels of gas in the building and they had to break out all the windows to keep the building from blowing up."

No cost estimate for the damage was reported and the restaurant was boarded up on Saturday while police continue trying to identify the caller.

This was the second incident of prank calling being targeted at a Burger King eatery this week. A similar call was made to a Burger King in Oklahoma on Thursday night in which the speaker said that harmful levels of carbon monoxide were in the building. The window damage on that occasion came to $10,000.

A similar call to a Burger King outlet in California, about an alleged gas leak in February, resulted in $35,000 in damage.

In addition to workers smashing the windows on that occasion, a manager even crashed his car into the building.
