It has been announced that Taoiseach Enda Kenny will meet British Prime Minister David Cameron next Friday June 17th.

The British referendum on European Union membership will dominate the meeting between the two men.

Voters in the UK go to the polls on June 23rd to decide whether or not to stay a member state of the EU.

While the UK government has urged the British population in Ireland to vote.

The 2011 Census shows 288,627 people here listed the UK as their place of birth.

Overall, there are 5.5 million UK citizens estimated to be living overseas and potentially eligible to vote in the referendum.

Earlier this year, David Cameron and the British government secured changes to Britain’s relationship with the EU, in the hopes of keeping it within the bloc.

Downing Street has said it believes the deal gives “the UK within the EU the best of both worlds.”

The so-called ‘special status’ deal ensures the UK will not join the Euro, will not be part of further European political integration and also contains a commitment to reduce EU red tape.
