A body has been found on a bog in County Meath, where a man is believed to have been secretly buried by the IRA after being abducted and murdered.

23-year-old Brendan Megraw, from Twinbrook in west Belfast, was newly married when he went missing in 1978.

The remains were found in a drainage ditch at Oristown bog by contractors called in to to prepare the site for forensic excavations.

As of yet, there is no formal confirmation that the body is that of Megraw's. However the State Pathologist is expected to begin the process of a post mortem and identification shortly.

Speaking to Jonathan Healy on Newstalk Lunchtime, Brendan's brother Sean says he believes the remains found this morning are those of his brother:

Mr Megraw is one of 17 people abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA. The victims are often referred to as the 'Disappeared'.

Brendan Megraw was abducted from his own home in April 1978, while his wife was expecting the couple's first child.

The area of bogland in Oristown has already been examined on three other occasions in the search for Megraw - the last time in 2010.

The latest search by the Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains in the area got underway at the end of August.
