A lawyer for Bill Cosby has said the comedian won't dignify "decade-old, discredited" allegations of sexual abuse with a response.

Attorney John P Schmitt said in a statement posted online that the fact that the allegations are being repeated does not make them true.

Cosby, who has never been criminally charged over any of the claims, does not intend to "dignify" the allegations with a comment, Mr Schmitt said.

The statement added: "He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr Cosby or any of his representatives."

It follows Cosby's silence on the allegations during a radio interview yesterday.

There has been a growing uproar over allegations that Cosby assaulted several women in the past.

Last month a fellow stand-up, Hannibal Buress, caused a furore with a routine accusing Cosby of rape that gained wide exposure online.

In a recent article in the Washington Post, Barbara Bowman, who accused Cosby of drugging and raping her in 1985, wrote how she was "grateful for the new attention to Cosby's crimes".

In 2006, Cosby settled a civil suit with another woman over an alleged incident two years before.
