A bull on a Mayo farm might soon be sent to the slaughterhouse because he only shows an interest in other males.

The bull, a pedigree Charolais by the name of Benjy, was bought to breed with the farm’s heifers, but only has eyes for the farms bulls.

When the herd was scanned to check for potential pitter patter of hooves, the local vet revealed that none of the cows had been impregnated.

Benjy’s owner, a farmer who wishes to remain anonymous, said that he had accepted the bull’s sexual preferences, but that it might mean a trip to the abattoir.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, the farmer said: “The bull is now too old to castrate and turn into a bullock so I will keep him for the factory.”

“Benjy had already been tested and everything was normal, so it became apparent that the problem lay elsewhere.”

At first, the farmer thought that Benjy might have been suffering from a bout of performance anxiety, struggling with the pressure of “doing the business in public.”

But after monitoring Benjy’s bonking patterns, it became clear that the bull was more inclined to court other bulls.

“At first I didn’t take seriously that the bull could be gay but after seeking advice I know this can happen,” the farmer said.

A substitute bull was brought in to father a new herd, and a number of cows are now carrying. But Benjy’s fate hangs in the balance, with the prospect of him leading Castlebar’s Gay Pride parade fading every day.
