Barack Obama is in Cuba at the start of an historic trip to the country.

He is the first US President to visit the island since 1928.

It is hoped his trip will usher in a period of improved relations, after decades of tension.

Speaking on his arrival, Mr Obama called it an "opportunity to engage with the Cuban people":

"For the first time in more than half a century the US flag flies over a reopened embassy.

Having an embassy here means we are better able to more effectively advance our interests and to understand the needs of the Cuban people."

History in the making

The last US President to visit Cuba was Calvin Coolidge when he arrived in Havana back in 1928.

Air Force One arrived in Havana Sunday, carrying President Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, their daughters, Malia and Sasha, and the girls' grandmother.

The plane touched down over 88 years after Coolidge's visit.

President's plans

The Obamas toured old Havana in the rain yesterday, after the President greeted embassy staff and their families.

Later today, Mr Obama will hold talks with Cuban president Raul Castro and also hold an event with US and Cuban entrepreneurs.
