Despite the advice of mountain rescue teams and the gardai, hundreds of pilgrims, some barefoot, have continued to arrive at Croagh Patrick to complete the annual pilgrimage.

It is thought to be the first year in living memory that the pilgrimage had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

A yellow rainfall warning is in place for Ireland and rescue teams said they would be unable to properly assist those who got into difficulty because of the dangerous climbing conditions.

The Reek Sunday pilgrimage has been happening in County Mayo for over 1,500 years.

It sees mass celebrated at the summit, and Confession offered.

As many as 20,000 people were expected to climb the 764-metre high mountain today.

The yellow weather alert is in place until at least 3pm, with totals of 25 to 35 milimetres of rainfall expected in many areas.
