Adnan Syed, the subject of the viral podcast 'Serial', has been granted his request for a new trial.

In 2000, Syed was convicted for killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in Baltimore, Maryland and received a life sentence.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a retired Baltimore City Circuit Court handed down an order this afternoon, vacating the murder conviction.

Judge Martin Welch wrote in his opinion that Syed's trial attorney "rendered ineffective assistance when she failed to cross-examine the state's expert regarding the reliability of cell tower location evidence."

Syed's new lawyer Justin Brown took to Twitter to announce the news:

Adnan Syed has always maintained that he was wrongfully convicted of the murder.

In 2015, he became the subject of a highly successful podcast as the host of 'Serial', Sarah Koenig, used investigative journalism to look into the finer details of the case.

Through a series of interviews with Syed and his classmates she tried to uncover the truth behind the murder. The works carried out by the show eventually led to his case being reopened.

If you missed the 'Serial' buzz, you can listen back to all the episodes here, as well as Season 2 - which looks at a different case.
