A man has died after being swept out to sea amid large waves and high winds in Cornwall.

The man, who was in his 30s, was rescued along with his wife and two-year-old daughter at Fistral Beach in the southwest of England.

Two other children in the family had managed to scramble onto rocks.

Lifeguards attended the scene late yesterday afternoon and carried out CPR on the man before he was airlifted to hospital. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency said he died there last night.

His wife, who sustained minor injuries, and daughter were also taken to hospital, as were the other children.

The UK Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for most of England and Wales today as a low-pressure system moves in from the west, with winds expected to reach 40 to 50mph inland.

The weather has caused events including the Bournemouth Air Festival to be cancelled at short notice.
