Today Tánaiste and Labour Party leader Joan Burton joined Shane Coleman for a discussion of the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum, welfare policies and Labour's approach to the 2016 general elections.

Here's what she said:

On the same-sex marriage referendum

"There's a huge amount of stories emerging around the different kind of lives that people have led, particularly if they are gay... and the difficulties they've experienced."

"[Turnout is] always a concern in a referendum."

"The coolest place to be next Friday is to be in a polling station casting your vote. Take a selfie."

"Diarmuid Martin... displayed enormous sensitivity and thought."

"This campaign has been incredibly positive."

"When contraception was first made freely available... [the public was told] Ireland was going to change in a really bad way for ever... People were made to feel extremely scared [in previous referenda.]"

"Nothing is being taken out of the constitution."

"We will be a more open and more inclusive society."

"I'm not aware that either Atlantic Philanthropies or Mr Feeney... have taken any involvement... in any way in funding the referendum campaign."

On the age referendum

"[The referendum will be defeated] from what I've heard."

"I wouldn't recommend [running for President at 21] to anyone certainly."

On the Department of Social Affairs

"There are a vast number of people who are really anxious to get back to work."

"People have made enormous efforts to get out [from welfare support] as quickly as possible."

"Our next big step is take get our young people.. as many apprenticeships as possible."

On mortgage rates 

"If the banks decide that they've gone deaf... and suffering from complete amnesia as to what people in Ireland did to bail them out.. then that's a strategic decisions they're making and there other ways of addressing the issue."

"People have endured serious reductions... banks have to never forget that."

"We want people to be charged prices that are reasonable."

On the 2016 general election

"The terms of the election here will be very different than the UK."

"Labour will be contesting elections in an independent manner."
