Waterford Airport is opening its runway for a charity event in honour of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick.

The Rescue 116 pilot operated out of Waterford Airport for a decade, and the facility will host a 5K run in her memory on September 16th.

Organisers say: "Many people in Waterford and the Southeast fondly remember Dara, so we couldn’t think of a better way to honour her memory as well as doing something very positive for charity."

"Running down the runway used by Dara for the ten years she was based with the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117 at Waterford Airport is a fitting memorial to the beautiful girl, colleague, friend, sister, daughter, mother and hero we lost on 14 March 2017".

Dara was one of four crew members on the Coast Guard helicopter who lost their lives in a crash off the Mayo coast last March.

This week, a specialised search is taking place off the Mayo coast for her colleagues Ciaran Smith and Paul Ormsby.

No trace has been found of the two men.

Funerals have been held for Captain Fitzpatrick and her colleague Captain Mark Duffy.
