Primark has confirmed that staff at its Belfast store will be paid up to the end of next week after a massive fire burnt down the building.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze last week, which gutted the historic city centre shop.

In a statement, the company said their "management team were working closely with colleagues to ensure they are being supported."

Staff members have been paid this week, and will be paid again next week - with the retailer adding that they are "finalising plans" and will contact staff directly as soon as possible.

The statement adds: "Primark reiterates our ongoing commitment to the city of Belfast. We are looking to be up and trading in the city as soon as possible and are currently exploring a number of options.

"As you can appreciate, there are some areas that we simply can’t comment on or confirm today."

Last week's fire led to a number of streets in Belfast city centre being closed for several days.

Firefighters are said to have managed to save a recently refurbished area at the back of the building, and no other buildings were damaged.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
