Thousands of public transport passengers face a hike in fares from today.

December 1st marks the introduction of new fares for the coming year.

While there are price increases across many bus, train and Luas services, other fares remain the same - and some passengers can even expect reduced fares.

One of the biggest increases sees Luas only annual and monthly tickets increase by 10%.

The National Transport Authority (NTA), meanwhile, says commuters in Cork, Limerick and Galway can expect savings due to an expansion of city bus zones.

In addition, children under five can now travel for free on public transport.

Anne Graham, CEO of the NTA, says they want to give families with young children a break

She explained: "We recognise that the cost of travel for people with a young family can be expensive.

"Today's move is just another step towards making sustainable transport more affordable for families."

Meanwhile, many households will face higher bills from today, with some electricity, gas and broadband prices to rise.

Energia, Flogas, Pinergy and PrePayPower are increasing their rates from this morning.

Sky and Vodafone customers can also expect a jump in their bills.

Mark Whelan of Bonkers.ie explained: "Although price hikes are never good news, there may be a silver lining for Sky and Vodafone customers, who are free to change providers without being hit with a contract breakage fee if they have received an increase.

"Energy customers who are on the receiving end of a price hike should consider switching to a cheaper, discounted deal."
