Gay Byrne is recovering after suffering a heart attack.

RTE confirmed the former Late Late Show host took ill on Monday.

The 81-year-old is now recovering well and his family has asked for privacy.

The state broadcaster adds that "all his friends and colleagues across RTE are thinking of him and wish him all the best with his recovery".

The veteran presenter currently hosts a weekend show on RTE's Lyric FM, as well as the ongoing Meaning of Life television series.
