A pilot has been killed after an F-18 jet crashed during take-off from an air base outside Madrid, says Spain's defence ministry.
Television pictures showed a massive smoke cloud rising from the Torrejon de Ardoz base, around 20 kilometres east of the Spanish capital.
The ministry said an investigation has been launched into the crash, noting that is not yet known what caused the crash.

It is the second time a military plane has come down in Spain in a week.
A pilot died on Thursday when a Eurofighter jet crashed near the Los Lalanos base in Albacete province.
It was returning from Madrid after taking part in celebrations for Spain's National Day.
