Sinn Féin's deputy leader has criticised a blog post which described Mairia Cahill's relationship with her alleged abuser as a "year-long sexual liaison".

On her Twitter page, Mary Lou McDonald described the claims as "shameful and cruel".

The blog post suggested Ms Cahill's alleged abuser would have been attractive to many 16-year-olds: “year-long clandestine sexual relations between these two people ignited by a lawful but ‘a few cans of beer’ induced seduction by a silver-tongued, musically talented, IRA-powerful type of charmer whom many a 16 year old would likely fancy... it's possible but I don't know, do you?”

Seamus Finucane - one of the people accused of participating in a "kangaroo court" to investigate her claims – shared the blog posting on his Facebook page.

Ms Cahill has described this as "disgusting" and has again called on Sinn Féin to apologise to her.

The blog post was shared by Seamus Finucane, one of the four individuals accused by Cahill of being one of the individuals involved in the ‘kangaroo court’ which saw Cahill brought face to face with her attacker.

Meanwhile, politicians from other parties have called for an end for the ‘online smear campaign’ being waged against Ms Cahill by some Sinn Féin supporters.

Joanna Tuffy, Labour TD for Dublin Mid-West said the allegation that Ms Cahill “was in some kind of consensual, lawful relationship with the man who raped her, marks a new low in this sorry debacle.”

Tuffy called on Sinn Fein to “stand down their keyboard warriors and end this smear campaign immediately.”

Niall Collins, FF spokesperson on Justice said he is, “appalled by the level of abuse being directed at Maíria Cahill online.

“What Maíria is experiencing is disgraceful and is clearly designed to intimidate her and punish her for speaking out about her abuse,” Collins added.
