He was alone in a white VW Golf at the time of the shooting.

Gardaí say shots were fired, and a silver/grey VW Golf left the scene at speed towards Clune Road and Jamestown Road.

The victim was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was later pronounced dead

Gardaí say a car which may have been involved has been found burnt out in the Victoria Bridge area on the Naas to Rathangan Road. The car has been preserved for a technical examination.

The victim is understood to be a well known republican.

The man is well known to gardai and a relative of slain Real IRA figure Alan Ryan.

The shooting is not believed to be connected to the recent gangland feud in the capital.

Superintendent John Quirke appealed for witnesses to come forward:

Anybody with information is being asked to contact gardaí in Finglas on 01-6667500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any Garda station
