A German man has died after blowing up a condom machine with a home-made explosive on Christmas Day.

The 29-year-old was struck by a piece of metal in the explosion.

His two accomplices took him to a nearby hospital in Schoppingen, initially telling staff he had fallen down a stairs.

During police questioning they confessed that the injury was sustained during an attempted robbery of the condom machine.

The three men had intended to take cash from the dispenser and after rigging the device took cover in their car nearby.

However, according to a police report, one did not close the car door and was fatally stuck by debris.

The two surviving men were taken into custody but later released.
