Gardaí are continuing to investigate the death of a man they say was assaulted in the Dublin Mountains.

The 64-year-old's body was discovered close to a forest track on Ballinascorney Hill in Brittas on Friday morning.

The man, who was local to the area, had been reported missing on Thursday.

A 41-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder probe. He remains in detention this morning for questioning at Tallaght garda station.

Superintendent Peter Duff, who is leading the investigation, told Newstalk that gardaí are keeping an "open mind" as to the motive of the killing.

The man left his home to go for a walk at around 6.30am on Thursday but failed to return, he said.

The preliminary findings of an examination by the state pathologist Linda Mulligan indicate the deceased died as a result of an assault.

Anyone who was in the vacinity of Ballinascorney Hill between 6.30am on September 29th and 4am on September 30th has been asked contact Tallaght garda station on 01 666 000 or the force's confidential line, 1800 666 111.
