A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of David Byrne, who was gunned down at the Regency hotel in Dublin in February.

Patrick Hutch of Champions Avenue, Dublin 1, is the brother of Gary Hutch, who was shot dead in Spain last year.

David Byrne, a 33-year-old father of two from Crumlin in Dublin, was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Drumcondra three months ago.

An armed gang, some of whom were dressed as gardai, stormed into a boxing weigh-in and opened fire.

Patrick Hutch appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court this evening wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a blue sweatshirt.

Detective Sergeant Mick Mulligan said the 24-year-old made no reply after being formally charged with Mr Byrne’s murder.

There was no application for bail during the brief appearance because that will have to be made before the High Court if he so wishes.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court again next week.

Three other men, who are aged in their 30s and 50s, remain in Garda custody as part of the investigation into the murder.
