A funeral service is taking place later for actor Leonard Nimoy, who died on Friday at the age of 83.

The actor who played Spock on 'Star Trek' will be laid to rest at a cemetery near his home in Los Angeles.

Fellow Star Trek actor William Shatner says he cannot make the funeral, but proposed that fans celebrate his life on Twitter.

Shatner says he is in Florida after agreeing to appear at a Red Cross Ball tonight, adding that he cannot make it back in time.

"I feel really awful. Here I am doing charity work and one of my dearest friends is being buried," Shatner said on Twitter.

"So maybe tomorrow we come together here and celebrate his life. So let's spend some time tomorrow celebrating Leonard's life and remembering the man," he added.

Nimoy had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Tributes have been flooding in since the news broke on Friday.

The US President Barack Obama said: "Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. I loved Spock".

Mr Obama said that when he met Mr Nimoy back in 2005, "it was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for "live long and prosper"'.

Actor George Takei, who played Mr Sulu in the original series, said: "Today, the world lost a great man, and I lost a great friend. We return you now to the stars, Leonard. You taught us to "Live Long And Prosper," and you indeed did, friend. I shall miss you in so many, many ways."

Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' said: "I was lucky to spend many happy, inspiring hours with him. He won't be forgotten."

Actor Jonathan Frakes, who played the character of Will Riker in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' said: "RIP to the best First Officer."

Actress Gates McFadden, who played Dr Beverly Crusher in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' said Nimoy was an "Epitome of Sci-Fi Icons, artist of intelligence and great depth. His influence was far-reaching, his warmth unforgettable".

While 'Family Guy' creator, Seth MacFarlane said: "Leonard Nimoy brought us one of the greatest, noblest characters in the history of American storytelling. Someone find the Genesis planet."

This is a reference to when his character died in 'Star Trek II', and was brought back to life in 'Star Trek III'.

This was Nimoy's final time reprising the role that made him famous, in 2009's 'Star Trek' reboot - opposite Zachary Quinto.
