An Irish MEP is calling for prices in airport shops around Europe to be reduced.

Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes says that EU airports should sign up to a voluntary code, which would see prices in airport shops reduced to come into line with prices charged on the streets.

The politician says there have been consumer complaints, including reports that soft drinks can be up to €1.50 more expensive to buy in an airport shop, and that chocolate bar can be upwards of €1 more expensive.

The Fine Gael MEP also says he received one complaint "where a bottle of water and a cheese sandwich cost €8.20".

MEP Hayes says the idea would be tourism and consumer friendly if put in place here and across the EU:
