Bernie Sanders has responded to the clashes between Donald Trump supporters and protesters yesterday, with the US senator describing the billionaire as a 'pathological liar'.

In a statement, Sanders said that while some of his supporters did attend the rally, the protest had nothing to do with his campaign.

"As is the case virtually every day, Donald Trump is showing the American people that he is a pathological liar," the statement reads. "Obviously, while I appreciate that we had supporters at Trump’s rally in Chicago, our campaign did not organize the protests.

"What caused the protests at Trump’s rally is a candidate that has promoted hatred and division against Latinos, Muslims, women, and people with disabilities, and his birther attacks against the legitimacy of President Obama," he added.

In a press conference, Sanders also claimed "what the Trump campaign has been about is insulting Mexicans in a very crude way... it’s been about insulting African Americans".

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton also released a statement on the events in Chicago.

She says "the divisive rhetoric we are seeing should be of concern to all", adding that "we need to address that anger together.

Barack Obama has said those campaigning to replace him should concentrate on making things better for the people - not hurling insults at each other:
