The Federal Foreign Office in Germany has given a unique reaction to the EU referendum in Britain.

The UK voted in favour of a Brexit by a margin of 51.8% to 48.2%.

Earlier sterling plummeted, stock markets crashed and David Cameron announced he will step down as British prime minister.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to recall the Dáil on Monday to discuss the result.

And the outcome will also top the agenda of an EU summit in Brussels next week.

But the German Foreign Office has already given its verdict.

Just after 8.00pm Friday, it tweeted: "We are off now to an Irish pub to get decently drunk. And from tomorrow on we will again work for a better #Europe!"

While earlier, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the result as "a bitter day for Europe."

"This is not an easy day for Europe. The main thing now is to stand together and show that we have the strength to come through this crisis," he added.
