The Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan is facing a motion of no confidence today.

The Sinn Féin motion will be debated in the Dáil.

The party's justice spokesperson Jonathan O'Brien said: "We call on the Government to utilise the powers it has in legislation to force her to step aside.

"This is part of the process in terms of restoring public confidence - there is a huge amount of work which needs to be undertaken by Government, and by An Garda Síochána, in restoring that public confidence.

"And we believe that removing the Garda Commissioner is part of that process".

It comes as the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee will discuss her response to a list of questions sent to her for answers.

Commissioner O'Sullivan was given until Tuesday to provide answers to some 28 questions, following her appearance before the committee earlier this month.

The commissioner was brought in to answer questions in relation to the fake breath tests and wrongful court convictions for road traffic offences.

Speaking Tuesday at the AGSI annual conference in Killarney, Commissioner O'Sullivan said those involved in falsifying breath tests will be dealt with - adding that cases will potentially be referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

She said she wanted to hear from conference attendees about how they thought there were 14,700 wrongful convictions and how almost one million breath tests were invented.

AGSI President Antoinnette Cunningham told her she did not afford sergeants and inspectors fair procedure while the investigations into what happened were continuing.

Ms O'Sullivan said it was not about blaming anyone but about learning from past mistakes.

The Oireachtas committee could decide either to accept her answers, or recall her for further questioning.
