LinkedIn is urging you to bring your parents to work on November 6th. It comes after research revealed that one in three parents do not know what their children do for a living.

The online professional network polled 15,000 people, and found nearly 60% believe their parents have valuable professional advice to offer but they just do not share it enough.

The first 'Bring In Your Parents Day' was launched in Ireland last year and is now being rolled out to 15 other countries - including Ireland, the UK, US, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Australia.

The initiative is seen as an opportunity to give parents an inside view of their child's professional life.

"Parents can often be a valuable part of their child's professional network, however, our research reveals professionals aren't taking full advantage of their parents’ experience and wisdom," says Sharon McCooey, senior director at LinkedIn Ireland.

"Parents are often overlooked when it comes to seeking career advice so Bring in Your Parents is all about highlighting the benefits of turning to them."

Many parents (35 %) agree they have the skills to help - yet admit to holding back. Nearly a quarter blame not knowing enough about their child's career and worry their child does not want or will not listen to them.

The research also showed that more than 12% admitted to never thanking their parents for their guidance, with over half - or 58% - acknowledging they should thank their parents more often.
