For the first time in 34 years, the editorial board of USA Today has taken a side in the US presidential election.

The paper stated today that: "the choice isn't between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates - Republican nominee Donald Trump - is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency."

Going further it states: "From the day he declared his candidacy 15 months ago through this week’s first presidential debate, Trump has demonstrated repeatedly that he lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents."

The paper goes on to list his shortcomings including his erratic nature, his prejudices and his checkered business history. However, the publication falls short of offering unqualified support for Hillary Clinton.

USA Today is America's best selling paper averaging over $4 million units sold daily.

The criticism of Trump follows on from the Cincinnati Enquirer's endorsement of rival Hillary Clinton after the paper backed a Democratic nominee for the first time in almost a century.

"There is only one choice when we elect a president in November: Hillary Clinton," it concluded.
