Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party ahead of this year’s US presidential election, has reportedly fired his controversial campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, right as early polls show the reality TV and property mogul trailing behind his likely rival, Hillary Clinton.

“The Donald J Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” said Trump’s campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”

Speaking to The New York Times, anonymous sources close to the New York candidate claimed that Trump fired Lewandowski after Trump’s political allies, donors, and children expressed their concerns over Lewandowski’s ability to guide the campaign as it enters the race for the Oval Office.

Lewandowski’s work on Trump’s primary run has seen him become a focal point in the increasingly strained relationship between the billionaire mogul and the US press, which has recently seen a number of major publications, including the Washington Post, have their press credentials taken away and banned from covering Trump rallies.

Reports from campaign staffers suggest that Lewandowski’s dismissal, while coming out of the blue, had been in the offing for a number of weeks. Trump’s campaign will now strive to bring together the splintered factions of the Republican Party ahead of its national convention in Cleveland in a month’s time.
