The Lord Mayor of Dublin has said he hopes the Catalan region of Spain will get independence.

In an interview with the Catalan News Agency (CNA), Christy Burke said: "We certainly understand the position, the views and the feelings of the Catalan people because we know what it was like to be treated, at least some of us do, as second-class citizens".

"The ballot box is a wonderful thing...Catalans can do that, the ballot box speaks volumes", he added.

Asked about whether the Spanish government will allow a referendum for independence in Catalonia, Mr Burke said: "I would hope so, you deserve your independence, you deserve your self-determination".

"It's like the Scottish people. For years, they were looking for that and it was being ignored...When the people of Scotland demanded their right to have a referendum on independence, they got it. Independence didn't happen, but it might happen next time," he added.

Catalonia is a region in the east of Spain made up of four provinces, of which the largest city is Barcelona.

Catalans held a non-binding referendum on independence last November defying the Spanish government, which had sought to block it.
