Calls for Justice Minister to provide protection for Afghan man assaulted in Cloverhill Prison

A rally has been taking place this morning at the Department of Justice organised by the Anti-Racism Network, calling for the release of the Afghan man who was assaulted and injured in Cloverhill Prison earlier this week.

The 21-year-old was found walking along the side of the M7 around two weeks ago. It is believed he had arrived as a stowaway on a lorry.

Walli Ullah Safi could not speak English and had no documentation.

He was detained in Cloverhill, where he was assaulted on Wednesday during a riot at the prison.

A demonstration has been taking place outside the Department of Justice this morning from 11.00am, asking that he be freed.

Walli's solicitor Conal Boyce spoke to Jonathan on Newstalk Lunchtime about his client's current condition, saying as best he knows he is doing quite well despite some injuries:
