An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that claimed the life of an elderly woman in Limerick city.

The blaze broke out at a house on O'Curry Place last night.

Three units of the Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene.

A woman in her late 80s was found unconscious in the house.

She was pulled from the blaze but was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination is due to take place later.
